How to choose the right brochure fold: bi-fold, tri-fold, Z-fold and gate fold

Use a bi-fold for simple menus and programs, a tri-fold for service overviews, a Z-fold for step-by-step content and a gate fold for premium, high-impact presentations.

The way a brochure unfolds controls the order in which people see your content. Choosing the fold before you design saves a lot of rework later.

Bi-fold (half fold)

One fold creates four panels. It is simple, sturdy and works well for menus, programs, price lists and short company profiles.

Tri-fold (letter fold)

Two folds make six panels, the classic brochure. It fits easily in a rack or an envelope and is ideal for a service overview with a clear cover and contact panel.

Z-fold

The sheet folds in an accordion shape. When opened, the reader sees all panels in sequence, which makes it good for step-by-step explanations, timelines and product lines.

Gate fold

The two outer panels fold inward like doors and open to reveal a large center spread. It creates a strong first impression, so it suits premium products, real estate and events.

Tips before you design

Keep important content away from fold lines and make the panel that folds inward slightly narrower, so the paper closes cleanly. Ask us for a template for the fold you choose.

  • Plan the cover, the first panel the reader sees when opening, and the back separately.
  • Do not place faces or key text on a fold.
  • Test a folded printout before sending the final file.

Choose the fold that matches how you want people to read: quick summary, step by step or a big visual reveal.
